He has performed in the USA, Japan, and Europe with such jazz artists as Joe Henderson, Lew Tabackin, Dave Holland, Ernie Watts, Peter Erskine, Marc Johnson, James Moody, Kevin Mahogany, Ira Sullivan, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and many others. He is featured on twenty-eight compact discs both as leader, and with various jazz artists. Strange has played the Santa Fe Jazz Festival, and the Telluride Jazz Festival. Phillip Strange lives in Osaka, Japan. He was house pianist at Umeda jazz club Azul and plays regularly at Wazz (Osaka), Jazz On Top (Osaka), Royal Horse (Osaka), Rugtime (Osaka), Sone (Kobe), Goodman (Kobe), Creole (Kobe), Lovely (Nagoya), Star Eyes (Nagoya), and many other jazz clubs in various locations in Japan. He often tours around Japan with both Japanese and American jazz musicians. Strange’s CD In The Moment (Summit Records) is a duo recording featuring Philadelphia drummer Larry Marshall, and was released in 2006. It received favorable reviews, and features both jazz standards and new compositions. Quiet is a solo-piano CD released in 1999, that features a mix of standards and original music. Most recently, Strange is working on a duo CD with vocalist Yuki Yamaguchi of Brazilian music, and a new CD of solo-piano jazz standards. In 1999, Strange was awarded a university fellowship (full scholarship and stipend) to study at the University of Miami, where he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts (2003). As a doctoral student, Strange received awards in Down Beat Magazine, including Best Instrumental Jazz Soloist (2003, 2002), Best Jazz Original Composition (2002), and Best Jazz Instrumental Group (2001). Strange has taught at the University of Miami, Arizona State University, and Miami-Dade College. Strange’s student won Best Instrumental Jazz Soloist (2005). Strange now teaches at Azul Music School (Osaka), and Koyo School of Music (Kobe). Strange has a Masters Degree in piano performance (Arizona State University), and has performed classical piano recitals, and five piano concerti with orchestra. フィリップ・ストレンジ - プロフィル Phillip Strangeは、過去２５年間、ジャズ・ピアニスト、作曲家、そして大学教授として活躍しています。ジョー・ヘンダーソン、ルー・タバキン、デーブ・ホーランド、アーニー・ワッツ、ピーター・アースキン、マーク・ジョンソン、ジェームス・ムーディー、ケビン・マホガニー、アイラ・サリバン、グレン・ミラー・オーケストラ等と、アメリカ、ヨーロッパ、そしてここ日本で共演し、また、２０数枚のCDに Featured Artist、またはGuest Artistとして参加しています。２００６年１月にアメリカでリリースされた最新CD “In The Moment” は、早くも本国の各ジャズ誌で好評を得ています。最近では、Santa Fe Jazz Festival や Telluride Jazz Festivalでも演奏しました。 １９９９年に奨学金給費特別研究員としてマイアミ大学に招かれ、２００３年には博士号が与えられました。博士号研究員としてマイアミ大学に在籍している間には、ダウンビート誌より、"Best Instrumental Jazz Soloist"（２００３、２００２）、"Best Jazz Original Composition"（２００２）, "Best Jazz Instrumental Group"（２００１）等、数々の賞を受賞しています。Phillip Strangeは、演奏だけでなく、ジャズ・ミュージシャン育成にも才能を発揮し、２００５年には、マイアミ大学で教えていた彼の生徒も"Best Instrumental Jazz Soloist" を受賞しました。また、修士号はクラシックピアノ演奏、学士号は音楽教育で取得しており、クラシックピアノのリサイタルやオーケストラとの共演の経験も数多くあります。 １９８８年から１９９８年にかけては、日本全国で演奏活動をしており、全国ツアーによる各地のコンサートホールやジャズクラブでのコンサート、各地YAMAHAホールでのクリニック及びコンサート、Blue Note Osakaでの演奏等を主に活躍していました。その他、ホテル・ニューオータニ大阪、宝塚ホテル、新阪急ホテル、新オリエンタルホテルなどでレギュラーアーティストとして出演していました。今回来日した２００５年８月からは、大阪梅田のジャズクラブ、AZULのハウス・ピアニストとして演奏しています。 |
